It is believed that Lord Surya visits his son Saturn  and Saturn is the owner of Capricorn (Makar Rashi ). Therefore, this day is known as Makar Sankranti. The holy Ganges river also descended on the earth on this day, hence  the festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated.

In the Mahabharata, Pitamaha Bhishma voluntarily gave up the body only when the sun rose. The reason for this was that the spirits leaving the body in Uttararayana either go into heaven for some time or those souls get rid of the cycle of regeneration. While leaving the body in Dakshinayana, the soul may have to face darkness for a long time.

Lord Krishna himself has also said that the importance of Uttarayan is that in the auspicious period of 6 months of Uttarayan, when the Sun God is Uttarayan and the earth remains light, then abandoning the body in this light does not regenerate the person and such People directly attain Brahm. Conversely, when the sun is Dakshin and the earth becomes dark, then in this darkness one has to be born again after renouncing the body.

The tradition of flying kites on this festival is prevalent in many places. People enjoy this festival with joy and joy by flying kites on their roofs throughout the day. Particularly kite flying competitions are also held.

The religious reason behind flying kites is that Shri Ram also flew kites. Makar Sankranti is a holiday for several days in Gujarat and Saurashtra and is celebrated here more happily than any other state in India.
